-Spoilers for the Truman Show and inception, If you haven't watched either movie I would highly suggest you do! Both movies are really good.
Sometimes I wonder whether everything is fake.Like whether were all actually in a simulation or if we are all in a dream of somekind.Its something I often think about.How likely is it that everything is false, that nothing we feel or experience is actually true.
I remember seeing a video on youtube which said that the Truman show is actually a tragedy. I mean think about it,Truman even after he escapes, he’s going to be always wondering as to whether or not what he is experiencing is actually reality.
It’s quite a scary thought isn't it? That everything is false,untrue.But to be honest, even if everything is fake there isn't really anything we can do about it.And to be frank, we should accept that.Even if this world is nothing but an illusion,our experiences are still real. And that's what really matters, our emotions. The feeling of sunlight, breathing in fresh air. The feeling of eating really good food.Our pain,Our joy.Thats what matters isn't it?
Cogito ergo sum,I think therefore I am. We can say with full certainty that we exist, so therefore the reality we experience through our eyes exist.For example,when we are in a dream, we usually aren't able to say it's a dream.The dream becomes our reality. The dream is reality. If we accept something as real, it is real..well at least to us.
In the ending of inception, the main character doesn't stay behind to see the spinning top falling. It's a cliffhanger, something the audience is left wondering about. But the director himself states that it doesn't matter whether or not the top falls or not, what matters is the main character doesn't care if it is all really true or not, he accepts this as his reality.
However there is a flip side to this .If we say that what we see and believe is reality, then everything is real.People who believe the earth is flat are correct,what they believe is real. But this belief that the earth is flat is demonstrably false, so we can’t say that reality is just our beliefs and feelings.Reality is physical,its something that we can show is true.Lets say I get one Milk Chocolate Cookie Crumb Egg and another Milk Chocolate Cookie Crumb Egg , I can now say I have two Milk Chocolate Cookie Crumb Egg. This is true because our definition of two is equivalent to having one thing and one other thing.
So we can conclude that reality is something that fits this world framework. Reality is what fits this world's rules. Reality is objective.But our emotions are also real, our perceptions are real.Maybe our actual conclusion should be that there are two realities, our inner reality,what we believe is true and an outer reality, what is actually true.
Sometimes our inner reality matches our outer reality,for example our gut instinct about something or someone,it's an instinct we sometimes should follow. But other times our beliefs dont align with what is actually true. If we constantly find that something we believe is demonstratedly false,we should accept that.
I don't know what I'm trying to say here, these are just some of my thoughts on reality. I feel that this is a bit pretentious haha.
