Engelwood after dark ★ ★ ★

Short summary: Pretty great voice acting, goes off the rails after episode 18

Spoiler filled review

So plot wise it basically deals with univeristy students who make a podcast based on mysteries surrounding their universities, this is not an anthology series and there is an overarching plot. The two main characters play a kind of skeptic and believer role

Initially the myserty was compelling, what the characters did was all incredibly intresting, the brotherhood, taking it down the way the story was told

SO GOOD and the banter was fairly realistic

And then episode 18 came along, and you know it continues well. But then suddenly ghosts are confirmed our sketpic character just suddenly becomes a believer after witnessing a ghost. ( We dont see her reaction to the ghost and the context on the actual event itself is not clearly expressed). It then turns into a whole us vs ghosts thing. It just went a bit berserk honestly. Like Im not saying that transition cant happen but I feel like magnus archives is such a good representation on how to do that shift in storytelling or the mistleholme mueuseum, they transitioned into a different format. I know these podcasts arent structured the same but the transition has to be more gentle to another format in your storytelling through the podcast

Also the banter becomes less realistic, its just aaa, average

And here are some of my more petty complaints, first of all there is this japanese game they do to talk to a spirit, I forgot what and one of the characters is like oh maybe its based on shintoism or bhuddism cause like they have those religions there and then the characters call him a weeb? it wasnt funny, just kind of embaressing honestly. Like maybe if he refrenced some anime religion or whatever the comment would have made more sense and been funny! its just this is like.. "oh you know Americas main religion is christianity, you must watch a lot of family guy"

Huh??

and additionally some random incantation happens which is not delivered particularly well and the whole line sounds really akward and I think unintentionally funny

Also in a more seriouse note, one of the main characters characters sister has apparently killed herself and he doesnt believe its a suicide stating that my sister would never do that. And she didnt kill herself, she was killed by a incel ghost. But I guess this is an extremeely minor annoyance but people dont necessarily have to act a certian way to be experiencing depression and commit suicide. People can hide their emotions incredibly well and unfortunatly can hide that they have plans of suicide. I guess I wish the podcast talked a bit more about this aspect, but i guess its an accurate representation of grief. Honestly extremely minor annoyance it isnt even a proper complaint

I know I sound like I hate this podcast but no its pretty good, voice acting is great, the dialouge is still funny at some areas, the banter is realistic and i like the characters!

So uh yeah listen to the show!
